This perennial rush is unbranched, except near the apex where the inflorescence occurs. The stout central stem is green, glabrous, and round in cross-section. There are 2-5 alternate leaves along each stem. The blades of these leaves are up to 30 cm long and nearly 6 mm across. The blades are ascending to widely spreading and they often extend beyond the inflorescence.
